The dresses, the drama, the Oprah interview, the curtsy impression, the podcast, the other podcast, the lifestyle brand, and then the other lifestyle brand. And the whole time sitting in the same rooms, at the same events, on the same balconies, there was a woman that nobody was paying attention to, watching everything, saying nothing, and quietly making Meghan Markle look like the most unprepared person to ever walk through a palace door.

And whatever you do, don’t miss number nine, because that’s when Meghan gets demoted and Sophie gets promoted. Number one, she rejected the help before she even knew she’d needed it. So, in October 2019, Meghan mastermind media to make money Markle sits down for an ITV documentary and delivers the single most effective performance of her entire acting career.
She says almost nobody has asked if she’s okay. She tears up. She’s struggling and feels that she’s all alone and that she was completely isolated inside that cold, heartless palace and not a single soul has thought to pick up the phone and check on her. The world loses its mind. Sympathy floods in from every direction and now the abandoned princess narrative is born.
It becomes the foundation stone of everything that follows. Oprah, Netflix, the memoir, the entire multi-million dollar victim empire, all of it, built on one tearful two-minute clip. >> of Sussex has revealed the struggle she faced while pregnant, saying not many people have asked if she’s okay. Meghan has told a new documentary that any pregnant woman is vulnerable and she has found it difficult to deal with media scrutiny.
>> Any woman when they’re especially when they’re pregnant, you’re really vulnerable and so that was made really challenging and then when you have a newborn, you know? >> Mhm. It’s a long time ago but I remember, yeah. >> You know, it was and especially as a woman it’s really it’s a lot. So, you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed, it’s um Yeah, well, I guess and also thank you for asking cuz it’s not many people have asked if I’m okay but it’s uh it’s a very real thing. Beautiful.
>> Standing ovation. Somebody get this woman an Emmy. Except for one small problem, the Queen had already seen this coming. Before the wedding, before the cameras, before any of it. She personally offered Meghan the one woman in that palace who knew exactly what it felt like to walk in as an outsider and survive it.
And Meghan said no before she even knew she’d needed the help. Royal broadcaster Giles Brandreth knew the Queen for over 50 years and even wrote the book on what she was really like behind closed doors. >> And if that wasn’t enough, in a separate interview, Meghan also casually announced that their big public royal wedding, the one watched by 23 million people, wasn’t actually their real wedding. Just dropping that in there like it was nothing. >> Three days before our wedding, we got married. No one knows that, but we called the Archbishop and we just said, “Look, this thing, this spectacle is for the world, but we want our union between us.
” So, the vows that we have framed in our room are just the two of us in our backyard with the Archbishop of Canterbury and and that was the piece that >> It was the three of us. >> Just the three of us. >> It crashes into the monarchy like a freight train. Parliament debates it.
The palace is in full crisis mode. Headlines on every continent for weeks. The Queen is 84 years old. Prince Philip is in hospital. He’s gone within the month. But Meghan had receipts and a couch and she was absolutely going to use them. But here’s what every journalist watching knew and not one of them would go near.
What that interview actually was. What Oprah and Meghan were really doing together. What was actually happening on that couch. And then Meghan Kelly sat down, watched the whole thing, and had absolutely no problem saying exactly what it was. >> One of the most irritating parts of their exchange and one of the parts that makes it so not believable how Harry and Meghan are now saying we never claimed racism.
The whole acting job, Meghan Markle is an actress. So is Oprah Winfrey. That was all scripted out. If you don’t think that that was planned and arranged beforehand, you don’t understand how Oprah Winfrey does her television show. Uh it’s not journalism. It’s acting. And so for Meghan to sit there while Oprah was doing the what? What? They were concerned about how dark your baby and then Meghan Markle with her doe eyes cheering up like oh.
And now they’re like, “Racism? Who us? We never said that.” >> And Sophie of all people knows exactly what a scripted media event looks like. She spent years working in PR before she married into that family. She built public narratives for a living. She knows the difference between an interview and a performance.
She’d seen through this from the first trailer. The whole world was waiting for the palace’s response. Press requests flying in from every outlet on the planet. What did the royals actually think? What did Sophie think? And she had four words. Oprah who? What interview? >> Oprah Winfrey’s a name known by many, but apparently Prince Edward and his wife Sophie had no idea who she is.
Prince Edward, who is the son of Queen Elizabeth II and the late Prince Philip, and Sophie chatted with the Telegraph about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s super candid interview with Oprah. When the two were asked about the interview heard around the world, Prince Edward simply said, “Oprah who?” And Sophie asked with a laugh, “What interview?” Ouch.
>> Meghan spent two hours on that couch trying to torch the institution, and Sophie dismissed the whole production before she even finished her tea. And it didn’t stop there. Because at Harry and Meghan’s wedding, the Archbishop of Canterbury walked up to Oprah and asked her what she did for a living.
He didn’t know who she was. He didn’t recognize her, not even a little bit. And then Sophie defended him without blinking. >> But at the same time, Sophie spoke up to defend the Archbishop of Canterbury who famously asked Oprah what she did for a living at Harry and Meghan’s wedding. Sophie said, quote, “You know, if you’re not in a chat show, there’s no reason why you should know who she is.
Certainly not in this country anyway.” >> Meghan needed a two-hour interview to tell her story. Sophie dismissed it with four words and a laugh. Number three, she laughed at this. December 2022, volume one of the Netflix documentary drops, and Meghan, with the breathtaking confidence of a woman who has absolutely nothing to be confident about, decides to sit on a couch and take us all through what royal life was really like.
And then she gets to the curtsy, and she turns it into a full comedy routine. The massive exaggerated bow, the smirk, the pleasure to meet you, your majesty, delivered like a punchline. >> But I do want to show you one scene that I think sums up this self-delighted and delusional pair. >> How do you explain that you bow to your grandmother and that and that you will need to curtsy? Especially to an American.
Like, that’s weird. >> Now I’m starting to realize this is a big deal. I mean, Americans will understand this. We have Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament. It was like that. Like, I curtsied as though, “Pleasure to meet you, Your Majesty.” >> He’s not cool with that. >> Like, was that okay? >> Oh. >> Oh, so funny.
>> That’s taking the piss out of the queen. >> He looked uncomfortable, but at the end of it, he sat there like an idiot and grinned as she mocks his grandmother and the institution that she devoted her life to. That guy is such a pitiful milk toast that he did that. That is, I think, out of everything I’ve seen, the most revealing, the most sickening 10 seconds right there.
>> The whole thing was disrespectful. Like, she’s doing an impression at a dinner party. Like, the curtsy is just this funny, fussy, slightly ridiculous custom these uptight Brits do. An adorable quirk from a world she’d graciously escaped. The public reacted immediately. Social media lit up and nobody held back.
>> He looked a bit uncomfortable about the way Meghan appeared to be uh disrespectful of his late grandmother, uh Queen Elizabeth. And that sort of very deep bow that she did followed by her sort of mock pleasure to meet you, Your Majesty. I mean, that’s getting a lot of pickup over here in the UK at the moment.
So, and I think that um has offended quite a lot of people here. >> Now, this will blow your mind because the same woman who mocked the curtsy turned around and demanded the entire royal family bow down to her. >> Here are some of his demands. Full security for himself and his family, press control that will be coordinated by Buckingham Palace, and finally, for his wife Meghan Markle to be treated as her royal highness complete with bows and curtsies.
So, people are supposed to bow and curtsy to Meghan Markle. Absolutely not. Imagine you’re real royalty, right? You’re real royalty and you have to bow down to this like ex-duchess who traipses around a kitchen doing flower arrangements on Netflix? That’s like bowing down to one of the Kardashians. You know what I’m saying? Like I don’t want to bow down to Meghan Markle as her royal highness.
Y’all left the royal family. For Prince Harry to come in with all of these demands, it shows you that they’re both delusional. Meghan Markle’s delusional, Prince Harry’s delusional, they’re cuckoo cachoo crazy. >> Sophie never said a single word about it publicly. She didn’t have to because shortly after that, Sophie got a brand new title and with that title came one very satisfying piece of news.
She no longer has to curtsy to Meghan Markle, not ever again, no matter what demands the Meg makes. >> So apparently, Sophie, okay, Sophie is married to Prince Edward. Well, she was upgraded from the Countess of Wessex to the Duchess of Edinburgh, but let me tell you why it’s important. So both Queen Elizabeth and Queen Camilla previously held this title, but what this title means, what this title means for Sophie, beautiful Sophie, is that she no longer has to curtsy to Meghan Markle, okay? In the line of succession,
she no longer has to curtsy to Meghan Markle, okay? That is a booyah moment. We’ve all been there in life, okay? Whether it’s a boss or someone you don’t like who’s higher in the pecking order than you are. You’re tired of having to kiss the ring, having to be nice all the time.
She doesn’t want to curtsy anymore to this washed-up Duchess, wannabe Duchess of Scam-a-lot if she ever comes over to the UK. >> Number four, same family, opposite instinct. Now, here’s something nobody ever put side by side, but once you see it, you can’t unsee it. Meghan spent months planning the most important day of her life down to the absolute last detail.
The flowers, the Givenchy dress, the celebrity seating chart, every single inch of that wedding controlled, curated, and personally approved. And somewhere inside all of that perfectionism, a little girl tried on her bridesmaid dress and it didn’t fit. Princess Charlotte was standing there in tears. So Princess Catherine did what any mother would do.
She reached out to Meghan directly and told her exactly what was happening. Her daughter’s upset, the dress isn’t right. There are four days until the most watched wedding on the planet and a child is crying. Meghan had a full team of people, designers on speed dial, every resource a bride could possibly ask for. Here’s exactly what she said back.
>> was Kate saying, “Charlotte’s dress is too big, too long, too baggy. She cried when she tried it at home.” Meghan replied, “Right, and I told you the tailor’s been standing by since 8:00 a.m. here at KP, Kensington Palace. Can you take Charlotte to have it altered as the other moms are doing?” Kate replied saying, “No, all the dresses need to be remade and the day and the wedding is in 4 days.
” Meghan replies, “Yes, Kate, I know.” Dot, dot, dot. >> I mean, also, how petty is this? I don’t care. I mean, I really don’t care. I I’d be upset if my if if there we had 4 days to go and then my little girl didn’t have an outfit, too. >> Now, let’s fast forward to September 19th, 2022, Westminster Abbey, the Queen’s state funeral, the most watched, most scrutinized royal moment in decades.
9-year-old Prince George standing in front of the entire world trying not to fall apart. And Meghan, the woman who spent years telling everyone how much she loves this family, was nowhere near him. But Sophie was, and without being asked, without waiting for permission, without a camera crew or a press release about what a compassionate person she is, Sophie put her arm around that little boy and held him together in front of the entire world.
>> Well, Sophie Wessex has been captured sharing a sweet moment with her great-nephew. The Countess of Wessex was spotted comforting Prince George at the Queen’s funeral. Sophie is Prince Edward’s wife, who is the Queen’s youngest child and was considered a second daughter to the late Her Majesty. As the family gathered for the funeral at Westminster Abbey, Sophie had her arm around Prince comforting him.
Prince George, who is second in line for the throne, was seen shedding a tear at the funeral, which prompted his great-aunt Sophie to step in and console the 9-year-old. Social media users reacted to the sweet moment, calling it just lovely. >> The same family, but completely opposite instinct. That’s not a coincidence.
That’s character. Number five, alone in the car. Now the Queen has passed, the whole country has stopped. 10 days of sustained, reverent, collective grief, the kind this country hadn’t seen in decades. And everywhere Harry and Meghan appeared that week, the same concern kept surfacing, the same conversation over and over again among journalists, among aides, among everyone paying close attention.
Not about the Queen, about Meghan. Specifically, about how Meghan was going to behave at the biggest, most sensitive, most watched public moment of the entire decade. Royal watchers and journalists that had been tracking every single move had one very specific worry that nobody could stop talking about. >> you make of it? What did you make of the the rapprochement for this picture of them coming out together? And what do you think the answer is going forward? >> Well, when the Prince said he loved Harry and Meghan, that shook me as well
in his speech. And then when they Well, I mean I when Meghan got out the car, I was amazed. But obviously William has got to sort of do something about it. And he spoke to his brother and said, “Look, let’s let’s make a you know, a combined effort here.” But they did it because if they if Meghan had turned up for the funeral on Monday, all the papers would have been talking about Meghan.
And Prince of Wales and Prince of Wales Well, the King doesn’t want that. He wants It’s all about the Queen. And there are no there are no distractions. >> So now, on September 14th, as the Queen’s coffin was carried from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall, Harry was walking in procession behind it, which meant Meghan needed a car.
The Palace had to decide who she’d be riding with. They could have put her with someone safe, someone neutral, someone who’d smile politely, say nothing, and get through the journey without incident. So they put her in one with Sophie. Think about what that actually means for a second. The woman who’d spent 2 years publicly dismantling everything the royal family stood for, the Oprah interview, the Netflix deal, the memoir quietly being written in California, sitting in the back of a car with the woman who devoted her entire
adult life to protecting it. And Sophie, who loved the Queen like a second mother, who’d watched from the inside as Meghan took a wrecking ball to everything she held sacred, who, according to sources, chose deliberately to be in that car. No cameras, no microphones, no Harry, no aides, nobody else.
Just the two of them alone for the entire journey through central London. And Tom Bower had one very specific question about what happened inside it. >> I thought that the whole way in which the rest of the royal family treated Meghan and Harry today showed that they had very little sympathy towards them. And in return, Harry and Meghan looked as if they were quite angry that they weren’t being treated with respect they think they deserve.
I think what is interesting is I would love to have known what Sophie Wessex said to Meghan as they drove in the limousine between Westminster and um and Westminster Hall and the church. Sophie Wessex is a plain-speaking woman. Did she tell Meghan exactly what they all thought of her? The idea that the body language between William and Harry showed reconciliation is in my view nonsense.
>> Meghan sat down with Oprah by choice. She signed the Netflix deal, did two full documentaries all by choice. There wasn’t a single thing that she didn’t run toward with a camera crew behind her. But 15 minutes alone in a car with Sophie, and I bet she couldn’t get out fast enough.
Number six, Meghan ran and Sophie stayed. So, Meghan didn’t want to be a working royal. That much is clear. She wanted the title, she wanted the access, she wanted the global platform and the prestige that comes with marrying into the most famous family on Earth. But what she didn’t want was the actual job. No quiet decades of service, no showing up without cameras, no putting the institution above yourself day after day without a Netflix deal waiting at the end of it.
She wanted to be a royal the way you want a designer handbag, for what it says about you, not for what it asks of you. So, she left, kept the titles, moved to Montecito, and spent the next 5 years trying to coast off the very institution she’d publicly torched on her way out the door. A podcast, Netflix, a Spotify deal that collapsed before anyone knew what it was supposed to be, a lifestyle brand, then a different lifestyle brand when that one didn’t work either.
Every single venture built on the back of a royal connection she’d already burned to the ground on international television. >> I think she does want the validation, but she also wants to continue to coast off, you know, the royal title and use the HRH and you know, it’s not Meghan Markle, it’s Megan Sussex now, the infamous turn of phrase that she uttered to Mindy Kaling and then sort of was quite strong about everyone calling her Megan Sussex, which never quite tacked on.
She’s obsessed with the royal family and she’s obsessed, as you said, with the cash grab that she can make off it. In a way that, you know, she had as I’ve always said, they are gig economy royals where they want to work three days a week and then float back into California when it suits them and coast off those royal titles, whereas that’s not what being a royal is about at all.
>> And while Meghan was in Montecito figuring out her next rebrand, something was happening quietly back at the palace that nobody made a fuss about. There was no press conference, no announcement, no documentary deal, no sit-down interview about the personal sacrifice involved. Sophie looked at the gap Meghan had left behind and filled it.
Not because anyone asked her to, not because there was a camera pointed at her when she did it. She just saw what needed doing and did it for years without stopping, without telling anyone about it. Lady Colin Campbell said exactly what that meant for the institution. >> But obviously now Harry and Meghan are no longer working royals, the royal family has slimmed down.
We’ve got Sophie Edward stepping up now. That’s that’s that’s quite new, isn’t it? >> I don’t know her personally, but I have friends who know her very well and they have very good reports of her. I I think it’s wonderful and I would hope that their children would ultimately be incorporated as working royals. You know, I think it was always a terrible mistake that they were not known by their rightful rank of prince and princess and that they were not earmarked to join the rank of working royals from birth.
>> Meghan left for fame and spent five years chasing it. Sophie stayed for service, never left no matter how hard the work was, and became the most trusted royal in the family. Number seven, show up or show off. In February 2026, Harry and Meghan landed in Jordan. No invitation from the Jordanian royal family, who happened to be Prince William and Princess Catherine’s closest friends in the entire region and who wanted absolutely nothing to do with Harry and Meghan.
They had no invitation from the British Embassy, either, and they had no official role or official capacity of any kind. They showed up anyway to an Iftar event, which is the meal that Muslims eat at sunset to break their fast during Ramadan and that they had absolutely no invitation to attend. And this is the part that takes real nerve.
They had the full audacity to turn around and present the whole thing to the press as a humanitarian visit. Meghan arrived dressed for a magazine cover shoot. Multiple designer outfit changes throughout the day. Photographers clearly positioned in advance. Children lined up next to her like props in a campaign.
The Foreign Office took one look at the entire operation, officially distanced itself from the trip, and called it inappropriate, not awkward, not poorly timed, inappropriate. >> The Jordanian royal family refused to meet them because they’re good friends with William and Kate. And then now the Foreign Office has officially distanced itself from this pretend royal tour saying that it was inappropriate.
Couldn’t agree more. >> But the whole reason for them, I think, is that Meghan can have lots of pictures taken of herself. I mean, I think it’s as simple as that. She has to be shown. She wants to be there for the camera. >> Uh they turned up at a party to mark uh Iftar. The British ambassador there threw a party for the local community and uh the Sussexes turned up.
Now, they uh delivered this, their attendance at this British Embassy function, as justification for their visit, as if it was somehow made official. Well, it turns out they were not invited and had not been involved in arranging this trip, because they are private citizens. A former Tory Minister, Tim Loughton, said that it was entirely inappropriate that they were guests at the Ambassador, Mr. Hall’s function.
But then again, it’s not Mr. Hall’s fault, because they weren’t invited. They just turned up. What on earth are this bizarre pair playing at? >> Now, in that same year, Sophie quietly got on a plane. No designer outfits, no cameras arranged in advance, no press team coordinating the rollout, no strategy session about how this was going to land in the American market.
She flew to Ukraine, became the first member of the royal family to actually set foot there since the conflict began. She didn’t go for a photo opportunity, and she sat with the people who’d survived what happened there and listened to them. >> It’s a really significant moment. She is obviously a senior working royal, but, you know, we’ve not had a member of the royal family visit Ukraine since the Russian invasion.
A lot of the senior royals have spoken out in support of Ukraine, but today we’ve seen Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, visiting and not just anywhere in Ukraine, but visiting Kyiv. She’s been to Kyiv and she’s also been to Bucha and visited a memorial there, where where a huge numbers of Ukrainian civilians were were murdered. The sort of theme around this visit is a cause that’s really close to her.
She works a lot with victims of conflict. So, she’s traveled the world visiting various countries. We don’t often hear about these international trips she makes, but the likes of Colombia, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, all places she’s been to. >> Then she hand-delivered a personal letter from the King directly to President Zelenskyy.
>> We know that later on she met President Zelenskyy, the first lady as well, who she’s had a lot of dealings with in the past, um, know, looking at how they’re helping support people in Ukraine, but she have hand-delivered a letter written by the King, um, to the president, as well. >> Meghan showed up uninvited for the photos, while Sophie showed up where nobody else was willing to go.
Number eight, she saw everything at the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey, Meghan’s last official royal engagement before she packed up to move to Cali, and discovered that jam is apparently a business model. But, here’s the thing, if you know you’re about to torture the monarchy on your way out the door, and Meghan absolutely knew the bare minimum requirement for a functioning adult is to at least look like you care during your final public appearance.
It’s just one afternoon, just one service, just walk in, stand still, look solemn, and get through it. That’s the entire job description for the day, but Meghan couldn’t do it. While every other royal in that building gave the service exactly what it required. Sophie, Princess Catherine, and the entire working royal machine operating precisely as it should, Meghan was running her own internal program entirely. She was fidgeting.
She was chatting, carrying on like someone who’d already mentally boarded the flight to LAX, and was just killing time until takeoff. Like the whole occasion was a minor inconvenience standing between her and her new life. Like the people around her, the institution, and the service itself were all just background noise she hadn’t bothered to mute yet.
And Sophie was sitting just feet away from her, watching every single second of it. She didn’t say a word, she didn’t have to. A body language expert analyzed the footage and caught something on Sophie’s face, something that two decades of royal training almost managed to hide. >> You might remember that time when Sophie scared the out of Meghan with just one look.
I’m going to refresh your memory because there is so much more that was said with their body language. Edward was talking to Meghan, Harry was also involved in the conversation, but you cannot help but see that Sophie is, well, less than impressed with the exchange. She’s not buying it. Now, we can suppose that by this point there had been enough frictions inside the royal family regarding the Harkles, and it was a bit difficult for Sophie to show empathy towards her.
Now, you might be wondering why so much difference between her attitude and Edward’s. But it’s really common that inside a couple, the two have different way of expressing and filtering emotions. Maybe Edward was just trying to be polite at that moment. And the most relevant body language signal that we can spot in Sophie is a straight and stiff neck, besides looking away, of course.
But notice what happens when Sophie finally turns around and establishes eye contact with Meghan. She looks at her and doesn’t blink until Meghan evades her gaze, looking down and dissolving her own smile. The first and most important fact about this reaction is that Meghan knew that Sophie did not like her at all, and that’s why she focused on chatting with Edward.
>> Meghan showed up and started chatting. Sophie showed up and saw right through every single fake word of it. Number nine, Sophie saw it, then Meghan did it anyway. Now, at that same Commonwealth Day service, shortly after that moment where Sophie sat watching every single second of Meghan’s performance from 2 ft away, it was time to leave.
And what happened next as everyone stood up and headed for the door is something that’s worth talking about. Because before anyone took a single step toward the exit, the Queen had already made a very deliberate and very public statement about exactly where Harry and Meghan stood. The previous year, they had walked near Prince William and Prince Catherine, close to the front, right where Meghan felt she belonged.
But this year was different. >> Just a few hours ago, Prince Harry and Meghan entered Westminster Abbey for the Commonwealth Day service and made their exit from the royal family. It was their last public duty, and they were shown to their seats ahead of time, rather than walking through the church with the Queens.
Can we just like point out a few really obvious things, guys? >> Um did you notice where Harry and Meghan were sitting? They have been You know, this is when you realize the Queen, she might be in her 90s, she don’t play. When you get demoted in the royal family, she’s going to make sure the world sees, I am the queen and you are demoted.
This is a very public event and the eyes are watching them because this is Harry and Meghan’s last official royal event and then they’re out. However, who’s really smiling? Meghan. She’s very, very happy about this. Who’s not smiling in those pictures? Harry. I think he’s going to have a very hard transition. >> This year, the Queen placed Harry and Meghan behind Edward and Sophie, who were 11th in line to the throne and that wasn’t an accident.
That was the Queen using one of the most watched royal events of the year to show the entire world exactly what Harry and Meghan’s demotion looked like in practice, in public, at their very last official royal engagement. >> Last year, Harry and Meghan followed Kate and William both in the procession entering Westminster Abbey at this very ceremony last year.
