Venezuela is suffering a crisis in public services, especially outside the capital Caracas. Venezuela’s energy reform may be a step in the wrong direction. Moreover, it may be the lifeline that Chavismo was desperately seeking to survive, but let’s take it one step at a time.
First, why does Venezuela need to reform its entire electrical grid? That’s why . New nationwide blackout in Venezuela. A total of 20 of the country’s 23 states have been affected this Tuesday. This news story is from 2019, when Venezuela suffered one of its longest blackouts .
At that time there were still people who were surprised, and the media even came out about it . But unfortunately, now it’s normal to have payments almost every week. What am I saying? The weeks, the days. Venezuela’s electrical system has been collapsing for years, but since the capture of Nicolás Maduro, the situation has gotten even worse.
Right now, 90% of households in Venezuela experience daily power outages. Power outages that can last for hours. In the first three months of this year 2026 alone, there have been more than 36 protests over the blackouts. Of course they don’t reach, or rather, they don’t reach, the level of Cuba, where it’s rare to have electricity at any point these days, but they are getting dangerously close.
Simply put, Venezuela is unable to produce enough energy to meet demand, and this is evident in all aspects of life. The first thing that affects us is the thought that the few foods we have might be damaged. His wife Teresa says that he receives piped water every 18 days. Okay, this would be a Nacho Vidal-esque problem in any country in the world, but in Venezuela it’s even worse because don’t forget they have to make a democratic transition.
A democratic transition that, according to Marco Rubio’s plan , which I mentioned in several videos ago and with many quotation marks, would imitate the model that was applied in Spain. I repeat, with many quotation marks, not exactly the same. And what is the first step in this model? Economic stabilization.
In other words, the Venezuelan economy needs to start producing things again that can be sold, generate foreign currency, and be financed. And what product can Venezuela sell? that the world is currently eager to buy. Exact. Oil. Remember that in the 2000s Venezuela exported around 3.5 million barrels of oil per day.
They’ll be thrilled if they’re able to export a million barrels. The oil sector is completely busted. Keep in mind that most of the plants are inoperative due to lack of maintenance, but even those that are still standing cannot operate at full capacity because they need electricity. The little red spot you see is called the Orinoco Belt. This is where 90% of Venezuela’s oil is located. We have almost all of the country’s oil refineries here. When we think about extracting dinosaur juice, things like this come to mind. But in reality, an oil installation looks more like this. What you see here is an oil pumping station in Venezuela.
This is where crude oil is extracted from the subsoil, and there may be about 15 to 20 people working here. You might say, “Okay, well, there aren’t that many, it’s a small facility. Wait.” To extract the oil, they have to pump water at high pressure and then carry it through a pipeline for hundreds of kilometers.
This process alone can cost around 10 MW of electricity. And you’ll say, “Is that a lot? Is that a little?” That’s what a city of about 7000 inhabitants consumes. And this is just an oil well. But right now Venezuela has between 2,000 and 5,000 active oil wells. And I ‘m telling you that there are few of them because they have to increase what they export, but once they extract the oil, the story doesn’t end there.
Then they have to send it to much larger processing facilities like the one you see on screen. What you see here is the José Antonio Anzoy complex. Here, more than 1 million barrels of crude oil can be processed per day. In other words, this plant is connected by pipeline to thousands of oil wells in the Orinoco Belt.
In other videos I have already told you that Venezuelan oil is especially viscous. There, the oil is so thick and dense that it sometimes resembles tar more than a liquid. It is a crude oil called extra-heavy, so heavy that it does not flow easily through pipes. In other words, for Venezuela to export its oil, it first has to process it, and for that it absolutely needs giant industrial complexes.
In this one, which I showed you earlier, there are about 7,000 people working, so we can say that it’s like an oil city. To give you an idea, it is as large in area as the entire Chamberí neighborhood in the city of Madrid, in the capital of Spain. But again, the problem is not how big the plant is or how many people it has working there, but the energy it consumes.
We don’t have specific data for this complex, but we can estimate that a center like this consumes as much electricity as a city the size of Valladolid, which is the city where I was born and has 300,000 inhabitants. In other words, if Venezuela wants to be able to export oil, it needs a lot of electricity, a huge amount.

This project is undoubtedly the largest and most important in the country in terms of electricity generation capacity. I present to you the Guri dam. At its peak, this dam alone supplied 70% of all the electricity consumed by Venezuela. In other words, we’re talking about a real monster. To give you an idea, it took them more than 20 years to build it. Just like that, exactly as you see it.
They started in 1963 and finished the last phase in 1986. That is, they started when the Beatles were becoming fashionable and finished when John Lennon had already been murdered and people were listening to Modle Crew. The reservoir created by this dam is as large as the entire island of Mallorca and the dam itself is over 1300 m high.
To give you an idea, it is the eighth largest dam in the world. It is only surpassed by other dams that you will surely recognize, such as the Three Gorges Dam in China or the Itapú Dam. In the case of Guri and Makagua, which has 12 turbines, only five are working. Both the Guri dam and all the other dams have a problem of, you guessed it, lack of maintenance.
In other words, just like in the oil sector, things break down and nobody fixes them. And there comes a point where there are hardly any turbines left that are still working. And you might say, “But why don’t they fix their power plants?” I mean , it’s not that difficult. If almost your entire electrical system comes from a dam, kid, you just have to make sure you’ll always have the resources and personnel to work on it.
There’s no need to go too crazy. He may be negligent and corrupt in all other areas, but at least that thing that 70% of your country depends on should be in good hands. I think that makes sense, right? Yes, it does. The problem is that Chavismo is the most efficient machine ever invented by man to destroy things.
In other words, you put a Chavista in charge of Apple and people stop buying iPhones. You put a Chavista in charge of YouTube and in two years you’d be going back to watching traditional media and trusting them. In this case, the mega catastrophe began in 2007 with this news. Ávez Chávez announces the nationalization of the electricity and telecommunications services.
The Venezuelan president does not rule out extending the measure to other sectors. You know what they say. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But 21st-century socialism. For some reason, Hugo Chávez, in his infinite wisdom, thought that leaving electricity in the hands of private companies was “Long live evil! Long live capital!” [laughter] So he nationalized Electricidad de Caracas, which in turn was controlled by the evil and treacherous American company AS Corporation.
You know, we’re going to defeat the Yankee Empire again. But what was the Bolivarian alternative? It was as if suddenly the state was taking care of everything. What could possibly go wrong? Two years later, to everyone’s surprise, the electrical system already had its first crisis.
Ah, to be fair, this wasn’t solely due to mismanagement, but also to the drought that left the Guri dam half empty. And that’s when Chávez, again, in his infinite and turbulent wisdom, declared the so-called electrical emergency. What was this about an electrical emergency? Basically, that’s what your brother-in-law would do if he suddenly had to manage your country’s electricity grid.
What was the problem? Suddenly, the Guri dam was not generating enough electricity; it was unable to meet Venezuela’s demand. And this problem could be solved in two different ways. It could be solved well or it could be solved badly. Or rather, it could be fixed properly, or it could be fixed, as we say in Spain, on Mecagen 10, that is, by putting a patch on it.
Repairing the Guri dam was a long and expensive process, and one that could only be done by a few foreign companies such as the German Siemens, the Japanese Itachi or the American General Electric, which after all are the ones that put in the technology when the dam was built . That means long- term agreements, guarantees, legal certainty [clears throat] and above all, fewer opportunities to be corrupt.
So, what was the quick fix? Well, build cheap electric generators , usually powered by natural gas, everywhere and also at every dam. In other words, instead of improving the maintenance of what they had, which was the logical option, they started spending money like there was no tomorrow to finance small power plants without thinking about what it would cost to maintain them later.
Basically, they started building gas and diesel power plants like there was no tomorrow. The problem, then, is that the difficult part is not building a new power plant, the difficult part is maintaining it in the long term. Furthermore, building cheaper thermal power plants offers many more opportunities to hire new companies and, incidentally, collect a sweet kickback.
In other words, the Chavistas had to choose between a good but slow solution and a quick and clumsy patch to move forward. So, what do you think they chose? That’s it . And of course, along the way, a lot of businessmen close to Chavismo, the so-called bolichicos, made a fortune, mainly in this case a company called Thewake Associates.
These gentlemen secured contracts with the Venezuelan State for more than $2.2 billion and then subcontracted everything to a US company to do the work. The profits they made from this operation are close to $1 billion. But corruption aside, the biggest problem is that Venezuela’s hydroelectric plants barely received enough money to stay afloat.
And keep in mind that all those technologies they use are very special. For example, the turbines at the Guri dam are built by the Japanese company Itachi. The generators are built by the Swiss company ABB. And of course, all these companies are also the ones that sell the spare parts and all the pieces when they need to be repaired.
And those parts cost money; they’re not exactly cheap, either. But the Chavistas didn’t think maintenance was that important. Ultimately, what generates headlines and news is the politician of the day cutting the ribbon to open a new plant of whatever. Nobody celebrates the repair of a turbine. Conclusion: Over the years, these hydroelectric power plants have deteriorated to the point of reaching appalling extremes like this.
Corpoelec does not send enough energy from Guri due to deterioration in the transmission network. In other words, the Guri dam generated electricity, but they couldn’t transport it because there were a lot of switches and capacitors that were broken and nobody had repaired them.

Another 10 need urgent repairs. To give an example so we understand each other, it’s like that old computer you have at home that you haven’t touched for 10 years. Can you turn it on? Maybe yes, maybe no, but even if you could turn it on, it’s sure to malfunction. In other words, repairing everything would require an investment of between 15 and 40 billion dollars.
And now consider that the total revenue of the Venezuelan State in 2024 was 8,750 million dollars. In other words, repairing Venezuela’s entire electrical sector would cost more than double, triple, or even quintuple what the Venezuelan state collects in a year. As you can imagine, we’re talking about a huge long- term investment, and worst of all, in Venezuela.
I’ll accept the argument that his mother can invert it. And now, thinking this way, those companies need guarantees of at least 25 years to be able to make that investment profitable. And we’re talking about the land of the eh propós, which is still governed by the same people.

That means it is an illegitimate government, and although they now govern Venezuela de facto , those who succeed them will not consider them legitimate. So, what do we do? Electricity companies are reluctant to accept Venezuela’s intention to repair the electrical grid without payment guarantees. Ball. So, what’s the easy solution? Well, let the oil companies set up their own thermal generators for private use. In other words, instead of making 25-year agreements with Siemens or General Electric or Itachi or any other company, we put in little things like this. What you see here is what is known in the industry as a modular gas turbine, and it is an electric generator that you can assemble and disassemble in a matter of 30 days.

But these 30 MW, although not enough to power all of Venezuela, are more than enough to power a small oil installation. In other words, the average Venezuelan still suffers from blackouts, but you can now extract oil and you don’t need to meet with the opposition or anything like that. And if all this weren’t enough, this entire process can be done entirely with companies from the USA.
There’s no need to call the German company Siemens, or the Japanese company Itachi, or the Swiss company ABB, no. Everything can be done with Uncle Sam’s companies, companies that, by the way, are already supported by the White House. In fact, who would you say is his main ally? That’s right, Vice President J. Divans.
He has been going on for months about building fast-installing gas-fired power plants to feed artificial intelligence data centers. I don’t know if it’s a bad idea, I do n’t know if it’s a good idea in the case of artificial intelligence, but now he wants to bring this technology to Venezuela. And you might ask, why? This is where we get to the civil war within the Republican party.
